It was in a theater, at a showing of my second film, that I really caught the film bug. I’d always loved movies and was just coming to really know them as an art form, but I don’t think I quite knew how the drive for making films had become a part of me until this moment, surrounded by people about to see my little work, terrified. As it played, I could feel the pinch points coming, moments I’d carefully built around a technique, my stomach sinking – would it work? As I felt the audience warming to the characters and their interaction, I was sure my little bit of frippery would ruin it. I was heading for a bruising, off the edge, when, suddenly, with a single switch of meticulous framing at a key point, the people around me gasped. I was elated. Whatever the other flaws of our little film, this had worked, this choice had made an impact on the generous souls there to watch beginning filmmakers ply their talents. Since then, I’ve captured footage across the country, been featured in a gallery, and put together an educational course, all looking for that moment of connection. I hope you can find such a moment here.
